We're in a Mess, Folks
Look, I've been in this biz for 22 years. That's 22 years of deadlines, press conferences, and way too many cups of coffee. I started at a small paper in Ohio, moved to a mid-sized outlet in Chicago, and now I'm here, writing this. And let me tell you, the state of news today? It's a dumpster fire.
I remember back in '99, when I was just a kid, really. A colleague named Dave—let's not use his real name, he's kinda private—told me, "Journalism is about holding power to account." And I believed him. I really did. But now? Now it's about clicks, shares, and some algorithm deciding what's "trending." It's a joke.
But Let's Talk About the Real Problem
It's not just the algorithms. It's the people. The ones who think they're doing good by sharing every little thing that pops into their head. The ones who can't tell fact from fiction. The ones who'd rather watch a 30-second video than read a 300-word article.
I was at a conference in Austin last year, and I heard this guy—let's call him Marcus—say, "News is dead." And I laughed. I mean, I literally laughed out loud. But then I thought about it. He's not wrong. Not completley, anyway.
We're drowning in information. But how much of it is actual news? How much of it is just noise? I'm not sure but I think we're losing our committment to quality journalism. And that's a problem.

But There's Hope, Right?

I remember back in 2008, during the financial crisis. I was working for a paper in Chicago, and we were covering the story non-stop. It was exhausting. But it was important. We were keeping people informed. We were holding the powerful to account. And that's what journalism should be about.
But it's hard. It's really hard. And it's getting harder. Because the world's changing. And not necessarily for the better.

And yeah, maybe that means reading a few more articles. Maybe it means questioning what you see on social media. Maybe it means supporting local journalism. I don't know. But it's a start.
